A QUICK UPDATE
Day six extras
Car No. 36 Shaheed Wissanji
"We have had a day without
brakes. The master cylinder is failing and we have lost thirty minutes
on the road trying to cure the problem in service. But we have completed
all three competition sections and we are still here - and we are still
in the rally."
Car No. 29 Aslam Khan
"The front suspension broke
12 km into the second section. We sent a guy out on a bike to try and
get a spare but eventually we had to wait for the service car to come.
It was a bit frustrating since we had the helicopter hovering overhead
- my helicopter on loan for filming the rally - but no way of communicating
with it or we could have had the spare part very quickly !"
Car No. 48 Ekya Shah
Prina Shah went to have an X-ray
on her finger and it was confirmed that it was broken. But the husband
and wife team decided that they would continue.
EXTRA ! EXTRA ! From Day seven at 12:30
News from Saturday morning is that
Stig Blomqvist and Ana Goni have broken their Escort's transmission in
the first Tanzanian section about 9km from the end and are stopped. Forty
cars have so far emerged from the section and no sign of the Escort yet.
John Lloyd had double trouble in
his Datsun 240Z with first a puncture and then a broken fan belt after
hitting a fence, losing twenty minutes in total.
Waldegård still leads with
his Escort and now has an increased gap to second place man, Frederic
Dor in a Porsche 911. Gerard Marcy in another Porsche 911 is third and
seems to be closing the gap to Dor. Geoff Fielding is now fourth with
his Porsche 911 and after John Lloyd's troubles, Steve Perez has taken
fifth place with his Datsun 260Z.
Even before reaching the Tanzanian
border at Taveta, there were problems for Josef Pointinger whose Ford
Escort hit the back of Joginder Singh's official vehicle in the dust and
damaged both cars. And the service crew of car No. 19, Paul and Mary-Ellen
Kane also fell foul of the bad visibility and the 4x4 carrying many of
their Mustang's spare parts slipped off the road.
