Kenyans to field 36 drivers in KQ Classic Safari

Nairobi, August 14--- The 2007 Kenya Airways Classic Safari will be a battle ground between home grown seasoned drivers and European professionals between November 25 to December 2 in Kenya and Tanzania.

This high number has been inspired by the performance of Rob Collinge, winner of the last two editions of the Classic, which has already turned around the clock of time since the last truly East African Safari in 1973.

Despite his absence, Kenyans are expected to prove their mettle led by 1994 Safari champion Ian Duncan, navigated by Amaar Slatch, in a Ford Mustang.
Like in the past, foreigners have enlisted the services of local navigators, renowned for their knowledge of conditions on the ground.

The Safari marks the return of Coast-based Rob Hellier, one of the most consistent drivers of the 90s who will be partner by South African Kiestwelter in a Datsun 180B. With the opening sections being in Mombasa, Hellier will certainly be at home and impress from the beginning.

Of course Jonathan Savage and Quentin Savage are sitting pretty and having a head start over the opposition from experience of developing the Datsun 260Z which they have been driving in the KCB national rally championship series for the last two years.
Veteran Safari driver, John Rose, father to Lee Rose who is challenging for the national championship title, will be joined by Michael Barrisow in a Datsun 240Z while Renzo Bernardi and Marzio Kravos return in their familiar Mercedes Benz 450 SLC going for nothing but a top ten to improve on their last outing.

The Kenya Airways Classic Safari, listed in the world as the toughest for historic cars and soon winning the hearts of the Kenyan fans, will not go to Uganda because of crowd control and lack of open, safe roads, said event director Surinder Thatthi.
However, it will visit some of classic routes of the original Safari_Usambara Mountains (Tanzania), Taita Hills and the Kerio Valley in Kenya.

List of top Kenyans in the Safari: Ian Duncan/Amaar Slatch (Ford Mustang), Ekya Shah/Prina Shah (Colt Lancer), Robert Kaugi/Willie Mburu (Toyota Corolla), Ben Muchemi/ George Njoroge (Alfetta GTV), Shaheed Wisaanji/Mir Muzzarnil (BMW 2002), Quentin Mitchell/Russel Savage 9Triumph GT6), Imran Khan/Aslam Khan (Ford Escort Mark II), John Rose/Michael Barrisow (Datsun 240Z), Rommy Barmrah/Harvey Jutley (Datsun 240Z), Minesh Rathod/Sanchin Surnaria (Colt Lancer)
