News from the Kenya Airways Safari
Classic Rally.
With the last cars possibly not
arriving at the finish in Mombasa until late in the afternoon of Monday,
December 3rd, it has been decided to move the prize giving ceremony from
that evening to 11:00 am on the Tuesday morning and follow it with lunch.
There will still be all the normal finish ceremonies on Monday afternoon
- and probably some informal celebrations or commiserations that evening
- but all the formal activities are now moved to the Tuesday.
At the same time, the organisers have taken the opportunity to remind
all competitors that pre-event reconnaissance is prohibited and that crews
found using home-made notes during the event will be excluded from the
event. However, the organisers are supplying directional notes to all
competitors and to assist everyone to accustom themselves to these, the
first 80 km competitive section of the rally going away from Mombasa will
be open for competitors to recce using the organiser's notes. This will
be possible from Tuesday, November 20th.
One technical change is that, for reasons of safety, competitors are allowed
to use plastic, Perspex or polycarbonate side windows. The front and rear
screens must remain as per the homologation form for the car concerned
and, in particular, the front windscreen must be of laminated glass.
Finally, thanks to some sterling work by the organisation, the rally plan
has been expanded to be able to accept all the reserve entries. This means
that the entry list now stands at fifty-nine cars with no reserves listed.
"In fact" said Surinder Thatthi the Event Director "we
could just accept one more to make it a round sixty. But if there is anyone
out there wanting an entry, hurry and get in touch !"
