Press Release : 012 November 24, 2009

Arusha, Tuesday lunchtime

One story picked up this morning from those that came in late last night was from the Datsun 1600SSS of Peter Stoehr and Crispin Sassoon . Up in the Taita Hills, on the third section yesterday, they broke a rear suspension arm. "They don't normally break but this was one past being stuck back together again ! The wheel was practically off the car out to the side. And it all happened so fast. We just turned into this right hand bend and it broke. The front of the car whipped up in the air and across the road, fortunately in the direction of the mountain, not the drop the other side. We just had to wait for our service car to come in and fix it."

A late night was also the order of the day for assistant clerk of the course, Mike Summerfield. Fresh from his success as EmCee for the Welcome Party, the Ceremonial Start and the Kenya Airways hospitality area at the selection stage on Sunday afternoon, Somerset's answer to Bruce Forsyth had a long session trying to sort out route changes for Wednesday. His problems involved a fax machine with no memory and a printer for which he did not have the driver, but eventually all the information sent back from the 3-day car was typed out and ready for distribution as the crews left Taita Hill Lodge this morning.

The Ford Escort of Gianluca Ciaraldi and Uwe Kurstenberger left the start heading for Arusha but had no intention of doing the three competitive sections today as it needs some spare parts that will rendezvous with them in Arusha. The car has just drawn up outside.

Flash news in from the first two sections are that the Datsun 180B of Wayne Kieswetter and Steve Harris that was doing so well to lie sixth last night is reported as having rolled in the first section.

The Porsche 911 of Gerard Marcy and Stephane Prevot stopped for forty minutes in the second section and the report was that the problem was electrical.

Similarly, the Savage brothers, Quinten and Russell, were stopped for about the same length of time in the second section but as yet the cause is unknown.

Overall after two sections today, the lead is still held by Ian Duncan's Mustang which has set both fastest times and has drawn away from Björn Waldegård's Porsche 911 that it now leads by just over a minute. Third now is Steve Perez in his Datsun 260Z, ten minutes behind Waldegård and Graham Alexander, also in a Datsun 260Z, is fourth a further ten minutes down on Perez. In fifth place is Geoff Bell in a Datsun 180B who is just one second behind Alexander.
